chicks...

A few weeks ago the school hatched out 9 chicks in the classroom which had the children mesmerised - once one was found running around in the school hall it was time for them to move on and Nigel, Bell and Fluffy have been living in our back garden ever since.  They've eaten the lettuces, radish leaves, heather plant and lots of strawberry leaves, they spend their whole day peering into the quail house (and probably laughing as they free range it) and they do a poo every 10 paces (usually on the sand-pit lid).

The chicks have also now entered their teenage years...
They don't look quite as sweet with their stubby feathers mingled with chick fluff, not yet sleek grown up hens...

Just one egg would make up for all their teenage chaos, but they know we love them anyway!

Hello Melanie:
In our gardening days, we had a brief period of owning chicken. We did not find the process at all easy. The chicken were certainly very stylish [Black Rocks] but they squabbled amongst themselves almost continuously and finally had to go back to the farm from which they came.

The eggs, however, were wonderful!!

We wish you well with your chicken keeping. It is not, in our view, an easy life.

I used to have two hens too, they're brilliant and luckily I didn't have the problems that Jane and Lance had. The only thing they did do that was naughty was to try and eat the slow worms! But on the whole they were very entertaining. x

Put them on the naughty step until they start producing. No eggs, then
they have to leave home! harsh but true. x

They are great fun these chickens, but wont be with us forever - they are going to live on a farm in Wales just as soon as they push their luck too far (especially Nigel). In the meantime we are enjoying our 'chicken summer holidays'...I think the quail will be very pleased when their giant neighbours move on too.

They look so cute with their scruffy feathers. They do seem an unruly, greedy bunch - off to Wales with them just as soon as they stop you laughing
